Taiwan Applies to Join Pacific Trade Pact Days After China
TAIPEI—Taiwan filed to join a trans-Pacific trade group, days after China formally submitted its application, potentially compounding an already awkward position for the pact’s 11 members. Lo Ping-Cheng, a cabinet spokesman for the self-governing island, which China considers as part of its territory, said on Wednesday that Taiwan has notified all members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, known as the TPP, of its formal application to join and sought their support.
