Indian Girl’s Alleged Rape and Killing Sets Off Protests in Delhi
August 6, 2021, 6:43 pm NEW DELHI—An Indian mother’s allegations that her 9-year-old daughter was raped and killed have set off days of protests in the capital and renewed anger in the country over sexual violence and the mistreatment of Indians who belong to the country’s lower castes.
Hundreds of protesters held banners and chanted “We want justice” on Friday under makeshift tents on the streets in southwest New Delhi, where the girl and her family lived.
The police have arrested four men on suspicion of involvement in the alleged rape and killing of the girl, said Ingit Pratap Singh, a senior police officer in New Delhi. The investigation is still under way, and no one has been charged, he said.
The men couldn’t be reached for comment. The police declined to say whether the men had attorneys.
The girl’s mother has accused the men, one of whom is a Hindu priest, of raping and killing her daughter. The girl’s family belong to the Dalit caste, the lowest rung of India’s caste system, formerly called the untouchables. | Recommended news
